Re: The Legend of Mt. Mayon
Fr:
Bench (2007). 101 Filipino Icons. QC:
Adarna House, p. 155.
“… a young girl of long ago who was known in
the entire Kabikolan (Bicol Region) for her unparalleled beauty.
Daragang Magayon, which literally means ‘beautiful woman,’ was sought by many
suitors even from afar. But her people’s laws forbid the maiden of her village
to wed strangers. Thus, when she fell in love with Ulap, son of Chief Karilaya,
it grieved her dearly.
“When Daragang Magayon confessed her love for the stranger, her father, Tiong Makusog, showed great understanding and consideration. But her arrogant suitor Pagtuga forced her to accept his hand in marriage by kidnapping Tiong Makusog and holding him hostage.
“News of the impending union spread. On Daragang Magayon’s wedding day, a group of men led by Ulap invaded the village. Pagtuga perished at the hands of Ulap.
“Upon seeing her love, Daragang Magayon
rushed to Ulap. But a stray arrow hit her and she fell lifeless in Ulap’s arms.
Ulap, too, was killed as he was attacked from behind while lamenting over his
lady.
“With a heavy heart, Tiong Makusog buried
Daragang Magayon. Curiously, the ground underneath which Daragang Magayon’s body
lay started to rise steadily until it became a great mountain. To honor the
memory of the maiden Daragang Magayon, the mountain was name after her. When
the mountain started erupting, the people believed that it was caused by Pagtuga’s
spirit reclaiming the gifts he once gave to Daragang Magayon. In terrible
anger, the mountain would fiercely throw out the jewels, diamonds, pearls, and
bits of gold – so ashes would violently spew out of the crater and lava would
flow down the slopes.
“As years passed, Magayon came to be known
as the beautiful but dangerous Mayon Volcano.”
