>Definitions

--Language (in Linguistics) = the distinctively human  system for communication with well-defined structure, composed of sounds built up to form words and sentences to convey meaning.

--Dialect = usually GEOGRAPHICAL varieties within languages, e.g. English language – UK, US, AUS, & PH; Tagalog language – Manila, Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite

--Example of 1 Language (Tagalog) in 4 Dialects & 2 other languages:

>1. Manila Tagalog: Pumunta siya dito dala ang malinis na pinggan na ilalagay sa patuyuan ng pinggan.

>2. Batangas Tagalog: Pumarine siya tangan ang malinis na pinggan na ilalagay sa banggerahan.

>3. Bulacan Tagalog: Nagpunta siya rito na may dalang malinis na pinggan na ilalagay niya sa doon sa tauban.

>4. CaviteƱo Tagalog: Nagparini siya dala ang platong malinis na ilalagay sa batalan.

>Cebuano: Ni ari sila diri dala ang limpyo nga plato nga ibutang sa butanganang sa plato.

>English: He/She came here holding the clean plate to place in the dish dryer.

 

>Stats

--According to the 2023 Ethnologue (worldwide annual stats of languages), the PH has 186 established languages = 184 living + 2 extinct (Inagta Villaviciones, Inagta Dicanay)

--Of the 184 living languages = 175 INDIGENOUS + 9 non-indigenous (including English & Spanish)

--PH languages with fewer than 100 speakers: Arta (35-45), Inagta Alabab (10), Inagta Sorsogon (10)

--Other institutions & organizations, n = 130 to 190 languages

 

>Conclusion

--PH is one of the most LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE countries in the world and has the highest linguistic diversity index in South-East Asia.
